Accreditation has been granted to Central Michigan University to open a medical school. CMU President George Ross said the school was approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.
There is a projected shortage of United-States-trained doctors which is one reason this school is being added to the Mount Pleasant campus.
The next step in building this school is recruiting students. The university expects this new unit to contain students by next year.
The University of Michigan, Michigan State, Wayne State and Oakland universities also host medical programs.
